Soundwalk Part 2

Post your Sound Log and links to your audio files as a comment to this post by the beginning of class Week 3.

Part 2: Field Recording

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
An introduction to the art of gathering sounds from the real world.

Check out a Zoom H2 recorder from the cage (or use your own recorder if you have one). Find things in your environment which meet the following criteria and record one sound for each of the following qualities:

  1. Small room
  2. Large room
  3. Cafe or restaurant
  4. Store or mall
  5. Exterior, urban
  6. Exterior, nature
  7. Quietest ambience possible (very early morning?)
  8. Other space (gymnasium, pool hall, tunnel, cave, church, nightclub, etc.)

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Edit your raw recordings into clean and edited sounds. The length of each sound should be long enough to illustrate its sound qualities but not so long that it wears out its welcome. At least 30 seconds but no longer than 5 minutes. Create separate files for each sound you recorded--with just that one sound in the file. Name the file something descriptive which indicates what it is, i.e. "small_room.mp3," etc.

Fill out the Sound Log, with information for each individual sound file, as a blog comment (or link to your own website), with direct links to each MP3:

This sound was recorded in my kitchen. You can mostly hear the noise thats coming out from the refrigerator.

    Sound # 3

I recorded this sound while I was at work at Hashigo Restaurant. You can hear the background music and customers in the background chit chatting away.

    Sound # 4
    Store or Mall
This sound was recorded inside a Trader Joes in the morning. You can hear shopping carts, cash registers, and people walking around.

    Sound # 5
    Exterior, Urban
I recorded this sound outside 5 Points Plaza in Huntington Beach. You can hear people outside walking and talking and cars passing by.

    Sound # 6
    Exterior, Nature
I went to a park the other day I recorded a kid playing on the playground. You can hear the wind blowing and sounds of metal bars on the jungle gym.

    Sound # 7
    Quietest ambience possible
For this sound, I went outside my balcony at 2am. All you can hear is the sounds of cars passing by. I'm on the 3rd floor, so it was pretty peaceful.

    Sound # 8
    Other Space
I went into the gym at my complex. You can hear the sounds of the weights and metals bars being used.

    CafeFixed.wav
Clinking, talking, bird chirping, metal patio furniture moving, light wind
Sat, order food, propped up zoom and drank my drink. Also had to use my sweatshirt and purse to block wind, Gypsy Den, 1:15pm
Other than a few groups who were louder at times it was easy. Though next time I shouldn’t feed the birds.

    Mall.wav
muffled music, people talking, children crying, footsteps, echo, music.
Stood next to a planter on the second floor playing with my phone and hiding the zoom. Soutch Coast Plaza, 12:20pm
Had to be near a entrance to get enough people sounds, otherwise they were too distinct.

    UrbanOutsideFixed.wav
Traffic driving by on the freeway and getting off.
Set zoom up on metal city box. South Coast Dr. Off ramp 3:00am
It takes work to get rid of the reverb on it, otherwise it doesn’t sound like traffic.
